Andra: 3 - Time Management Games Shaped the Person I Am Today

Back in the early 2000s, my world revolved around video games. One minute I was Princess Peach in Mario Party 8 (the best Mario Party), the next I was shifting from wolf to human in Twilight Princess. Saturdays were for Wii Sports showdowns, and weekdays were for hopping onto Minecraft and Club Penguin. As I grew older, and obviously more mature, my thirst for turning games into real-life experiences hit me hard.

Level 1: As a kid with Windows XP and a taste of responsibility, I had the perfect lineup: Avenue Flo, Wedding Dash, Cake Mania, and Purble Place. I was obsessed with organizing chaos, clicking fast, and keeping everyone happy. Looking back, it was less gaming and more early workplace conditioning. Still, this fed into my early childhood dream: to have a job. Like a real job. I wanted to clock in, take orders, and serve up results.

Level 2: When I turned 15, I landed my first job at my mom’s boyfriend’s (now stepdad’s) restaurant.  I was living the Diner Dash dream: taking orders, bussing tables, brewing coffee, and giving pastries to extend customer patience. He was the only chef, which meant I was stationed at the counter (just like Flo) waiting to deliver dishes before the customer bar turned red. This was fast paced, stressful, and totally perfect.

Level 3: In high school (16 years old), I decided one job wasn’t enough. This was when my Papa’s Freezeria training from middle school kicked in (thank you Coolmath Games for giving me a part-time job before I ever paid taxes). I had the prep, the toppings, the build station, and the clock always ticking in my head. Multitasking orders and customizing sandwiches outside of Mike’s Way? That’s sandwich artistry under pressure, just how I like it.

Level 4: After about 10 months, I swapped subs for sweets and joined Crumbl Cookies (while still helping my stepdad, shout-out me at 17 years old). This wasn’t just baking; it was co-op survival mode. Think Overcooked, but with real ovens, and no margin for error. iPads tracked decorating time, no freezers, no shortcuts, chill-thaw-bake-cool-warm precision and recipe memory work that would have made the Onion Kingdom safe a thousand times over. I made a mental game to beat the timers and remember orders before they even printed. Managing dozens of cookies and preparing for rushes? This was easy, my controller thumbs have sweat harder.

Level 5: After taking a break during my first summer of college (call back to the last post), I got bored and decided to work at a Universal Studios hotel (18 years old). I was a retail attendant, running the mini mart before, during, and after Halloween Horror Nights. Clock in at 3pm, clock out at 2am, go to class at 9am. With that kind of sleep, I was living in a Five Nights at Freddy’s spin-off, except instead of animatronics, I see crazy drunk hotel guests.

Level 6: Today, I’m in the world of spreadsheets and revenue reports – fully living in Sims 4: Get to Work. I went from intern at 18 to full-time Financial Analyst by 20, all while finishing my degree. Still managing time, still juggling tasks, still fighting the invisible customer patience bar that now suspiciously feels like a deadline from my boss. Every game I played, every job I took, every timer I beat, trained me for this. Time management isn’t just something I learned, it is the proudest and most powerful skill I’ve built. It is what keeps me ahead, keeps me organized, and keeps me from burning out while juggling school, work, and life.

These games have trained me, the jobs have tested me, and now I’m playing the hardest, most fun game of all… reality.

And honestly? I’m kind of crushing it.

Andra: 2 - Breaking HIPAA: Medically Withdrawn Summer of 2022

July, Summer of 2022, my first semester at UCF. I boldly entered the next phase of my life, and immediately got absolutely wrecked by COVID.

My roommate and I got sick fast. Dorm life is basically a germ convention, and we caught an enthusiastic plague. I threw up for the second time in my life, coughed through the entire semester, and hovered at 94 pounds from a combination of illness and cucumber salad (dorm cooking is archaic). With that being said, while a collection of COVID symptoms won't get you medically withdrawn from school, losing your vision definitely will.

July 11th, 2022, I woke up with the right eye looking like it had lost a fight. Naturally, I went to the campus doctor who immediately declared pink eye. I ditched my contacts, doubled up with sunglasses over my glasses, and got weird looks in public like I was either high, contagious, or both.

July 15th, 2022, while using the medication, my eye continued to burn in the sunlight and every time I looked at any source of light. I went to the campus optometrist and revealed to me that it was not pink eye, but a corneal ulcer. He declared I needed to take new drops every hour while awake.

Chris, my now-boyfriend (just lover at this time), came to visit me that weekend via train. I, practically legally blind in one, had to drive us all over Orlando. The day I picked him up (Saturday), a blood vessel in my eye popped. The optometrist forgot to mention this horror-movie side effect, and UCF’s eye clinic was closed for the weekend. I was 17 at the time and couldn’t get an exam anywhere else, so naturally, Chris and I ended up having quality time at the ER.

They told me this was a normal side effect for the drops, so I continued to take them. During the weekend we went blurry-eyed and thriving to thrift stores, dinner shows, arcades, kava bars, and whatever else I insisted to drag us too.

Monday rolled around and Chris left, and I took another visit to the eye doctor. I was switched to even stronger eye meds. One medication prescribed the same one drop every hour, and the second medication required that morning and night I dilate my right eye so I can look permanently shocked on the right side of my face. My eyelashes began to turn white from the medication residue.

July 30th, my left eye began to act up. I was officially in hell.

I took the Amtrak to Tampa, celebrated my best friend’s birthday, and saw Chris again (we became official). I went to a specialist recommended by my previous doctor (he was on vacation for the rest of the summer) and told me that I do not have a corneal ulcer, but uveitis in both my eyes. Super rare, mainly found in older men with back problems, and usually only in one eye.

Cool, cool, cool.

I stopped taking the meds for my right eye and drowned my left in medication. My vision was so light sensitive I couldn’t even look at my laptop, let alone attend class. I filled out my medical withdrawal paperwork for the summer, which I could barely read through.

By the time August hit, I had medically withdrawn from the semester, officially broke up with both of my eyes, and fully committed to dating Chris instead. Just when I thought I was in the clear, my last eye exam (April 2025) I got the final boss of side effects: early cataracts at 20 years old. Turns out that even though it has been 3 years since my eyes have recovered, steroids linger. So, to summarize. I started college, got a virus, an eye disease meant for mysterious men with back pain that developed permanently, a medically excused semester, and a boyfriend. Not too bad.

Andra: 1 - Andra's Professional Editing Portfolio

I was originally writing a blog post titled: “How 2000s Time Management Games Gave Me Work Ethic,” but as I was scrolling through my emails looking for when I got hired at Jersey Mikes, I found something a little more interesting. When I was a child (2014; 10 years old to 2017; 13 years old) I was obsessed with Littlest Pet Shop (LPS is the community acronym). I made music videos, detailed worlds, practically designer outfits, Emmy winning soap operas, and NTM submissions. In case you are uneducated in the acronym 'NTM', it stands for Next Top Model. While my music videos and screenplays have been lost to time (I got a new IPad), I found my email submissions to LPS creators on YouTube to join their NTM contests. Spoiler alert… no one ever replied.
